About this place

The Alay Pavilion, or Alay Köşkü, is one of Istanbul's most elegant and historically evocative imperial structures, a refined Ottoman kiosk built into the outer walls of Topkapi Palace overlooking the grand ceremonial avenue of Alemdar Caddesi in Sultanahmet. Built in the 18th century and restored in the 19th, it served as the sultan's private viewing platform for watching military parades, guild processions, and public ceremonies passing below on the street.

Tips

Visit the beautifully restored interior to see the intimate imperial chambers and the original latticed windows through which sultans observed the street life and ceremonies below — a fascinating and atmospheric glimpse into Ottoman court life. The pavilion is one of Istanbul's lesser-known and less crowded attractions, making it a wonderfully unhurried experience just steps from the busy tourist trail of Sultanahmet. The Alay Pavilion is located directly opposite the main entrance to Gülhane Park on Alemdar Caddesi, within easy walking distance of Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern, and Hagia Sophia, fitting naturally into a full day exploring the historic peninsula.
