About this place
Designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and opened in 1830, the Altes Museum was Prussia's first public museum and the founding cornerstone of Museum Island. Its grand Neoclassical façade overlooks the historic Lustgarten, a park with roots stretching back to the 16th century. Together, the museum and garden form one of Berlin's most harmonious and culturally significant ensembles.
Tips
Visit on a weekday to avoid crowds and pair your trip with a stroll through the Lustgarten, perfect for a relaxed break between museums. A Museum Island day pass offers the best value, granting access to all five institutions nearby. The closest S-Bahn station is Hackescher Markt, with bus and tram connections also available. Book tickets online in advance during peak season to skip the queues.
