About this place

The Basilica Cistern is one of Istanbul's most extraordinary and atmospheric ancient monuments, a vast underground water reservoir built by Emperor Justinian I in 532 AD. Stretching across 9,800 square metres and supported by 336 marble columns, the dimly lit cavern is hauntingly beautiful. Two columns rest on upside-down Medusa heads, adding an air of mystery to this remarkable Byzantine marvel.

Tips

Book tickets online in advance as the cistern is one of Istanbul's most popular attractions and queues can be lengthy during peak season. The underground space is cool year-round, so bring a light layer regardless of the weather above. Allow around one hour for a comfortable visit and take time to find the two Medusa head column bases at the far end — easily the most intriguing feature of the cistern. The cistern is located in Sultanahmet within easy walking distance of Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace, making it a natural stop on any tour of the historic peninsula.
