About this place
The Blue Mosque, officially known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is one of Istanbul's most magnificent and recognisable landmarks, built between 1609 and 1616 under Sultan Ahmed I. Its striking silhouette of six slender minarets and cascading domes dominates the Sultanahmet skyline. Inside, more than 20,000 hand-painted blue Iznik tiles adorn the walls, bathing the vast interior in a serene azure light.
Tips
The Blue Mosque is an active place of worship and closed to visitors during the five daily prayer times, so check the schedule and plan your visit accordingly. Modest dress is essential β shoulders and knees must be covered, and women should wear a headscarf, with coverings available at the entrance if needed. Remove your shoes before entering. Arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon for the most peaceful experience and the best light filtering through the stained glass windows. The mosque sits directly opposite Hagia Sophia, making the two a natural pairing on any Sultanahmet itinerary.
