About this place
The Brandenburg Gate is Berlin's most iconic landmark and one of the most recognisable monuments in the world. Built between 1788 and 1791 by order of Prussian King Frederick William II, the Neoclassical triumphal arch stood at the heart of the divided city during the Cold War, becoming a powerful symbol of reunification when the Wall fell in 1989. Today it remains the enduring emblem of Berlin.
Tips
Visit early in the morning for the most peaceful and photogenic experience before the crowds arrive, as the gate draws visitors throughout the day and well into the evening. The gate is free to visit at all times and beautifully illuminated after dark, making an evening visit equally rewarding. It sits at the western end of Unter den Linden and the edge of the Tiergarten, connecting naturally with the Holocaust Memorial, the Reichstag, and the start of a walk along Berlin's grandest boulevard.
