About this place
Dolmabahçe Palace is the largest and most lavish royal residence in Turkey, built between 1843 and 1856 by Sultan Abdülmecid I as a symbol of Ottoman modernisation and prestige. Stretching 600 metres along the European shore of the Bosphorus in Beşiktaş, the palace blends Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical styles into a breathtaking ensemble of 285 rooms, 46 halls, and a crystal staircase beneath a four-tonne chandelier gifted by Queen Victoria.
Tips
Entry is by guided tour only, so book tickets online in advance as visitor numbers are limited and demand is high, particularly in summer. The palace is divided into the Selamlık and Harem sections, each requiring a separate ticket — visiting both is highly recommended for the full experience. The crystal staircase and the vast ceremonial hall with its enormous Bosphorus-facing windows are among the most spectacular interiors in the city. Dolmabahçe sits in Beşiktaş within easy reach of Taksim and Ortaköy, and the waterfront gardens and gates are free to admire from the outside even without a palace ticket.
