About this place
The Eiffel Tower is the most recognisable landmark in the world, an iron lattice masterpiece rising 330 metres above the Champ de Mars on the left bank of the Seine. Built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World's Fair, it was initially controversial but has since become the enduring symbol of Paris and France. Three levels of observation decks offer breathtaking views across the entire city and beyond.
Tips
Book tickets online well in advance as the Eiffel Tower is one of the most visited monuments in the world and queues without a reservation can be extremely lengthy. Climbing the stairs to the second floor is a rewarding and more affordable alternative to the lift, with excellent views along the way. Visit at sunset for the most magical experience, and stay until after dark to see the tower's spectacular sparkling light show, which runs for five minutes every hour on the hour. The Champ de Mars gardens below are perfect for a picnic with an unbeatable view, a favourite pastime of Parisians and visitors alike.
