About this place
The Galata Tower is one of Istanbul's most recognisable and beloved landmarks, a cylindrical medieval stone tower rising 67 metres above the bohemian Karaköy neighbourhood on the northern shore of the Golden Horn. Built by the Genoese in 1348, it has served as a watchtower, observatory, and fire lookout over the centuries. Its observation deck offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views in the entire city.
Tips
Book tickets online in advance to skip the often lengthy queues at the base, and visit at sunset for the most spectacular views over the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, and the historic peninsula. The surrounding Karaköy and Galata neighbourhood is one of Istanbul's most vibrant and creative districts, filled with independent cafés, art galleries, and boutiques worth exploring before or after your visit. The tower is within easy walking distance of the Galata Bridge and Eminönü, making it a natural addition to a day exploring both sides of the Golden Horn.
