About this place
Widely regarded as Berlin's most beautiful square, the Gendarmenmarkt is flanked by three magnificent 18th-century landmarks — the French Cathedral, the German Cathedral, and the Konzerthaus concert hall. Built during the reign of King Frederick the Great, the square has long been a cultural and architectural centrepiece of the city and hosts a celebrated Christmas market each winter.
Tips
Climb the tower of the French Cathedral for one of the most rewarding and lesser-known viewpoints in central Berlin. The square is free to visit at any time and looks particularly stunning in the evening when the buildings are beautifully illuminated. If visiting in December, the Gendarmenmarkt Christmas market is considered one of the finest in the city. The square is within easy walking distance of Unter den Linden, Bebelplatz, and Checkpoint Charlie, making it a natural stop on a walking tour of central Berlin.
