About this place
The Hippodrome of Constantinople was the social and sporting heart of the Byzantine Empire, once capable of holding up to 100,000 spectators for chariot races and public spectacles. Today the elongated square of Sultanahmet, known as At Meydanı, preserves the ancient racing track's footprint and three remarkable monuments — the Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpent Column, and the Column of Constantine.
Tips
Take time to examine all three ancient monuments standing along the central spine of the former track, each with a fascinating story stretching back thousands of years. The Egyptian Obelisk, originally erected in Luxor around 1450 BC, is particularly remarkable for its age and preservation. Entry to the Hippodrome is free and open at all times, making it an effortless addition to any Sultanahmet visit. The square sits directly alongside the Blue Mosque and within easy walking distance of Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, and Topkapi Palace.
