About this place

Ihlamur Pavilion, or Ihlamur Kasrı, is one of Istanbul's most intimate and beautifully preserved imperial retreats, a pair of elegant Baroque pavilions nestled within a tranquil walled garden in the Beşiktaş neighbourhood. Built between 1849 and 1855 by architect Nikoğos Balyan for Sultan Abdülmecid I, the Ceremonial Pavilion and the Retinue Pavilion are exquisitely decorated with ornate plasterwork, gilded interiors, and period furnishings of remarkable refinement.

Tips

The Ihlamur Pavilion is one of Istanbul's most peaceful and rewarding hidden gems, attracting far fewer visitors than the city's more prominent imperial palaces and offering a wonderfully intimate and unhurried experience. The surrounding walled garden, planted with linden trees that give the pavilion its name, is a beautifully tranquil retreat from the surrounding urban bustle of Beşiktaş and free to enjoy at any time. Visit the interiors of both pavilions to appreciate the contrast between the grand Ceremonial Pavilion and the more intimate Retinue Pavilion. Ihlamur is located in Beşiktaş within easy reach of Dolmabahçe Palace and Yıldız Palace, making it a natural addition to a full day exploring the imperial heritage of the European Bosphorus shore.
