About this place
The Istanbul Archaeology Museums is one of the world's great archaeological institutions, a vast complex of three museums housed within the grounds of Topkapi Palace in Sultanahmet. Founded in the late 19th century under the visionary director Osman Hamdi Bey, the complex encompasses the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the Ancient Orient, and the Tiled Kiosk Museum, together housing over one million artefacts spanning eight thousand years of human civilisation.
Tips
Allow at least half a day to explore the three museums at a comfortable pace, as the sheer scale and depth of the collections reward unhurried exploration. The sarcophagus of Alexander the Great, housed in the main Archaeological Museum, is among the most breathtaking ancient artefacts in the world and not to be missed. The Tiled Kiosk is one of the oldest surviving Ottoman secular buildings in Istanbul and worth admiring for its architecture alone. The complex is located within the grounds of Topkapi Palace in Sultanahmet, making it a natural addition to a full day exploring the historic peninsula alongside Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, and Gülhane Park.
