About this place
Istiklal Avenue is Istanbul's most celebrated and bustling pedestrian boulevard, stretching 1.4 kilometres through the heart of Beyoğlu from Tünel Square to Taksim Square. Lined with historic 19th-century buildings housing shops, cinemas, galleries, cafés, and consulates, the avenue draws millions of visitors and locals alike. A vintage red tram still runs the full length of the street, adding to its timeless charm.
Tips
Walk the full length of the avenue at a leisurely pace, ducking into the historic arcade passages — known as hans and pasajlar — that branch off on either side for some of the most atmospheric and lesser-known corners of Beyoğlu. Ride the vintage red tram at least once for a classic Istanbul experience, but be prepared for crowds as it is extremely popular. Visit on a weekday for a calmer experience, as weekends draw enormous crowds. Istiklal connects Tünel Square at its southern end with Taksim Square at its northern tip, linking it naturally with Asmalı Mescit, the Galata Tower, and the rest of Beyoğlu's vibrant cultural scene.
