About this place
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church stands at the heart of West Berlin's Kurfürstendamm as a stark reminder of the destruction of World War II. The neo-Romanesque church, built in 1895, was heavily bombed in 1943 and deliberately left in ruins as a memorial. Alongside the preserved tower, a modern church and chapel were added in the 1960s, creating a striking contrast of old and new.
Tips
Visit the interior of both the ruined hall and the modern chapel, where stunning blue mosaic glass windows create a uniquely serene atmosphere. Entry to the memorial is free, though donations are welcome. The church sits directly on Breitscheidplatz, making it easy to combine with shopping along the Kurfürstendamm or a visit to the nearby Berlin Zoo. Arrive early or late in the day to avoid the busiest tourist crowds.
