About this place

The Myndos Gate is one of Bodrum's most historically significant ancient landmarks, the sole surviving gateway of the massive defensive walls that once encircled the ancient city of Halicarnassus. Built in the 4th century BC during the reign of Mausolus, the gate gained lasting fame as the site where Alexander the Great launched one of his most determined sieges during his conquest of Halicarnassus in 334 BC. The preserved towers and gateway arch remain remarkably intact.

Tips

Visit in the early morning or late afternoon when the ancient stonework is bathed in warm light and the site is at its most atmospheric and uncrowded. The gate is free to visit and open at all times, making it an effortless addition to an exploration of Bodrum town. Take time to walk along the surviving sections of the ancient city walls extending from either side of the gate, giving a vivid sense of the scale and ambition of ancient Halicarnassus. The Myndos Gate is located on the western edge of Bodrum town centre within easy walking distance of the castle, the mausoleum, and the bazaar, fitting naturally into a day exploring the town's remarkable ancient heritage.
