About this place
The Ortaköy Mosque, officially the Büyük Mecidiye Mosque, is one of Istanbul's most photographed and enchanting landmarks, sitting directly on the Bosphorus waterfront in the charming neighbourhood of Ortaköy. Built in 1856 in an elegant Baroque style by architect Nikoğos Balyan, its two slender minarets and ornate façade frame a picture-perfect view beneath the soaring Bosphorus Bridge above.
Tips
Visit on a weekend morning when the surrounding Ortaköy square fills with one of Istanbul's most popular and atmospheric street markets, selling handicrafts, jewellery, and art. The neighbourhood is famous for its kumpir — loaded baked potatoes — sold from stalls just steps from the mosque and not to be missed. The waterfront promenade is perfect for a leisurely stroll with stunning views across the Bosphorus. Ortaköy is easily reached by bus or taxi from Taksim Square and Beşiktaş, and the combination of the mosque, the market, the waterfront, and the iconic bridge backdrop makes it one of Istanbul's most rewarding and photogenic half-day escapes.
