About this place
Rumelihisarı is one of the most impressive and dramatically situated fortresses in Turkey, built by Sultan Mehmed II in just four months in 1452 on the European shore of the Bosphorus in preparation for the conquest of Constantinople. Its three massive towers and imposing walls stretch down to the water's edge at the narrowest point of the strait, commanding breathtaking views in both directions along the Bosphorus.
Tips
Climb the towers and walk the walls for sweeping and dramatic views up and down the Bosphorus, one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the entire city. The fortress is far less crowded than central Istanbul attractions, making it a peaceful and unhurried experience well worth the journey. The surrounding neighbourhood of Rumelihisarı is one of Istanbul's most charming and authentically local villages, with waterfront fish restaurants and cafés perfect for a relaxed lunch. The fortress is easily reached by bus along the Bosphorus shore from Beşiktaş or Taksim, and pairs naturally with a visit to the nearby Ortaköy or a scenic Bosphorus drive.
