About this place

The Spice Bazaar, or Mısır Çarşısı, is one of Istanbul's oldest and most vibrant covered markets, built in 1664 as part of the New Mosque complex in Eminönü. Its L-shaped arcade of 88 vaulted shops overflows with mountains of colourful spices, dried fruits, nuts, Turkish delight, cheeses, and teas, filling the air with an intoxicating blend of aromas that has drawn traders and visitors for centuries.

Tips

Visit early in the morning before the cruise ship crowds arrive for the most atmospheric and unhurried experience. Don't be shy about sampling — vendors are generous with tastings of Turkish delight, cheeses, and spices. Look beyond the main arcade and explore the outdoor market surrounding the bazaar, where locals shop for fresh produce, flowers, and household goods at excellent prices. The Spice Bazaar sits in the heart of Eminönü alongside the New Mosque and the Galata Bridge, making it a natural starting point for a morning exploring the waterfront and the historic peninsula.
