About this place

St. Hedwig's Cathedral is Berlin's oldest and most important Catholic church, a striking Neoclassical rotunda modelled on the Pantheon in Rome, standing at the edge of Bebelplatz on Unter den Linden. Built between 1747 and 1773 under Frederick the Great, it has served as the mother church of the Archdiocese of Berlin for centuries. Following wartime damage, the cathedral was extensively renovated and reopened in 2023.

Tips

Visit the newly renovated interior, which has been thoughtfully modernised while preserving the cathedral's historic character and remarkable domed architecture. Entry is free, making it an effortless addition to a walk along Unter den Linden or a visit to the neighbouring Bebelplatz. Attend one of the regular masses or concerts for a truly atmospheric experience beneath the soaring dome. The cathedral sits within easy walking distance of the State Opera, Humboldt University, the Brandenburg Gate, and the heart of Berlin's most historic boulevard, making it a natural stop on any tour of central Mitte.
