About this place
Yıldız Palace is one of Istanbul's most extensive and historically significant imperial complexes, a sprawling ensemble of pavilions, villas, and gardens spread across a vast wooded hillside above Beşiktaş on the European Bosphorus shore. Developed primarily during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II in the late 19th century, the complex served as the de facto centre of the Ottoman Empire for over three decades and encompasses several beautifully restored pavilions open to visitors today.
Tips
Explore the vast wooded park surrounding the palace complex, one of Istanbul's most beautiful and peaceful green spaces, free to enter and perfect for a leisurely walk with glimpses of Bosphorus views through the trees. The Sale Pavilion, or Şale Köşkü, is the grandest and most impressive of the palace buildings and well worth the entrance fee for its elaborately decorated ceremonial halls and imperial furnishings. Check opening hours for the individual pavilions before visiting as they keep varying schedules. Yıldız Palace is located in Beşiktaş within easy reach of Dolmabahçe Palace and Ortaköy, making it a natural addition to a full day exploring the European Bosphorus shore.
